Bush’s Third Term VI

It was a busy week for President Bu..., I mean, Obama and his administration.

First it was Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano telling lawmakers on Wednesday that her agency cannot meet its 2012 deadline for screening all cargo coming into the U.S. for radiological and nuclear materials and "that total screening would require agreements with numerous countries, a position similar to one taken by the Bush administration." (Associated Press)

Then it was CIA Director Leon Panetta’s turn. A San Francisco Chronicle piece from February 26 states, “. . . in his new position, he is already echoing some of the tough rhetoric of his predecessors. He's vowing to continue the agency's aggressive operations against terrorist suspects, and even hinting that he supports continuing the attacks by unmanned Predator aircraft in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which have stirred anger among residents there. "This is a very persistent enemy that we're dealing with," he warned. "I don't think we can stop the effort to try to disrupt them ... because they aren't going to stop."

The Chronicle article notes that Panetta believes the President has the power to order the use of harsh methods to extract information from terrorists but adds Panetta claims he would not recommend such methods.

On Thursday Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated it is still the position of the United States to ban photographers from taking pictures of coffins returning to US soil. A media controlled by liberal extremists seems to think Gates allowing the families of the fallen to permit pictures is some kind of change in policy. A nice slight of hand. A free press should not be impressed with taking pictures of that which they are allowed. A free press should still be indignant that they are prohibited from taking pictures of what they want . . . the coffins of the fallen whose families have not given permission.

And finally, the President himself stated he will leave combat troops in Iraq right up until the last day of the Status of Force Agreement that President Bush negotiated with Iraq – December 31, 2011. That President Obama announced he will draw down troop levels in Iraq is being heralded by the liberal extremists who control the media as some sort of change from the Bush policy and some sort of campaign promise kept but the liberal extremist who control the media are simply complicit in the great lie. I’d be curious to know if President Obama’s draw-down rate is slower than the rate President Bush was beginning to draw-down troop levels. President Obama did say the pace of the draw-down could slow or be reversed if conditions on the ground changed.

when's the post that points out he's backed off of the $250K magic number for raising taxes? In Thursday's WSJ the third paragraph says the proposal to nationalize healthcare will be paid for by reducing the mortgage interest deduction for taxpayers in the highest tax bracket. The fourth paragraph points out that the highest tax bracket starts with taxpayers earning $208,850. The fifth paragraph reminds readers of the campaign promise to target families earning >$250K and declares "the administration said that this plan would roughly line up with that limit". ROUGHLY?

The next day the WSJ observed that between the phasing out of mortgage deduction to pay for nationalized healthcare and raising the highest rate from 35% to 39%, taxpayers in the highest bracket can expect a tax bill $11,000 higher. That's $1,000 p/month!!

And just like President Bush,is President Obama indifferent to the plight of the urban poor? I cite 2 examples:

First,I don't understand how he could let the National Guard pull out of New Orleans at 3AM today. The city is still dangerous and many people continue to live in squalor, particularly in the Ninth Ward. How those poor people have suffered and now thanks to Obama, they will continue to!

Secondly, Obama's Web plan which is included in the stimulus bill, largely overlooks the biggest group of disconnected people- the urban poor! His plan focuses on rural America- but what about those living in poverty in our cities? They desperately need access as job applications and public assistance programs that offer aid are all moving to the Web. Doesn't he care about struggling minorities??

Conscience,

You're obviously over-worked and sleep deprived.

I offer you the option to now answer your own question.

If I answer it, you will be embarrassed. Or, nobody will believe you seriously asked that question and that you were just playing my straightman and the credibility of the Comments section will be destroyed.

Please, no one else answer until we get one more contribution from Conscience.

Yes, I am over-worked and sleep deprived but the point of the question was to highlight the odd logic you're using. Presumably, to the extent Obama is continuing Bush's policies, you think his doing so is a good thing. But, rather than criticizing him for all of the things that you think he's doing wrong, you criticize him for doing things you think are right because he's not abiding by his theme of "change" and making a change you disagree with. Don't you see the Alice in Wonderland aspect of this?

Conscience,

You're missing my tone.

I'm extremely pleased with every single instance where Obama is reasserting Bush.

I'm mocking those who hate Bush who can't bring themselves to hate Obama; or, I'm mocking those who love Obama and can't bring themselves to love Bush for same.

Oh, and Obama doesn't need one more cheerleader in Massachusetts, I think he's got far, far, too many.
