Sen. Thompson and Rep. Hunter will Endorse Gov. Romney

On December 14, I explained how and why Gov. Romney was going to be the next President of the United States. The gist of the piece was that Republican primary voters would gravitate to Gov. Romney in greater numbers than to any other candidate as the Republican candidates drop out of the race.

My thesis is the Republican primary voters would make this informed decision on their own.

I'd now like to add a corollary to the above thesis.

After watching the Republican Presidential debate on Thursday, January 10, I've convinced that when Rep. Duncan Hunter and Sen. Fred Thompson drop out of the race both will endorse Gov. Mitt Romney.

Based on how poorly Rep. Hunter and Sen. Thompson are doing I'm not suggesting their actions will deliver some massive windfall of votes. I am suggesting that their endorsements will be pretty substantial proof that their supporters would naturally gravitate to Gov. Romney in greater numbers than to any other candidate as I've now suggested several times.

My predicted order of Republicans dropping out of the race remains unchanged from December 14:
6. Rep. Hunter - literally, with an announcement
5. Fred Thompson - literally, with an announcement
4. Rep Paul - figuratively, if not literally; probably will not endorse a candidate before the nominee is selected
3. Sen. McCain - literally, with an announcement; also, I'd be very surprised if he endorsed another candidate on his way out the door; Sen. McCain will not endorse Gov. Huckabee to hurt Gov. Romney because I do think Sen. McCain will put Country over campaign pettiness
2. Gov. Huckabee - figuratively, as he'll be in it almost to the end
1. Mayor Giuliani - figuratively, as he'll be in it to the end

Your loyalty to your chosen candidate is praiseworthy, but what is Mitt going to do after he loses his native state of Michigan? Wouldn't it be a better idea for him to withdraw and endorse Fred? I think a Thompson/Romney ticket is the best the GOP can put forward. Fred will make policy, and Mitt will help him administer the government, and then Mitt can run for President again in 2012 or 2016.

I keep waiting for Fred Thompson to "get in the game". Honestly, I've never seen a more lazy candidate in my life. To quote Apollo to Rocky, "There is no time!!" When is he going to get moving- people don't even know who he is.

So you are some sort of an expert but can't even spell "Thompson" correctly in your first sentence?

Doug, I appreciate your comments. But, just so everyone is clear, my candidate is Rep. Duncan Hunter. What I'm writing in the blog is what I think is going to happen not what I want to happen.

And, the best ticket (of tickets that are possible) the Republicans can put forward is Romney/Ridge. Any nominee that can convince Gov. Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania to be his running mate is a take-it-to-the-bank winner of the general election. There is no electoral college math that can produce a Democratic win if the Democrats lose PA. And, unlike Sen. Kerry just proved to us that his VP selection was NOT the most qualified person for the VP spot, Gov. Ridge can actually be President.

Marc, In 299 posts since inception, you've never commented before and you make THAT your first comment. Thank you, I guess.

Anonymous, lest I forget you, I think a lot of conservatives agree with you. Everyone who likes Thompson should take a look at Rep. Hunter.

Posting again as it didn't appear the first time--this is my best attempt at recreating an outstanding post!

Where to begin...I didn't even realize Duncan Hunter was as candidate!

Accepting that it takes an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore to run in the first place...I don't know why Hunter, Thompson, or Paul are still in this race; Rudy gets a bye until South Carolina or Florida or wherever it is he made his bet. Neither Hunter, Thompson or Paul will garner meaningful support (as Romney) and neither will drive the agenda (as Buchanan). Therefore, the fact they're hanging around is about ego and can be best characterized as selfish. They'll march around the country in a bus with their name on it ("Fill in the blank...fighting for America express"), a few scribes and a camera following them (I bet that's a rush(more)!) on a tour of America on the backs of their donors the way a welfare hog suckles the gov't teet or a Kennedy nurses from grandpa Joe's ill-begotten fortune. Time to winnow the field and let the big guns slug it out!

Hardball,

A brief bio on Rep. Hunter as excerpted from his official campaign site, "A Vietnam veteran, Duncan Hunter served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers and, after coming home, utilized the G.I. Bill to attend Western State University Law School in San Diego (now Thomas Jefferson School of Law). While completing his degree, Hunter supplemented his income by working in farming and construction, and opened a storefront legal office after graduation where he began serving many in the Hispanic community, often without compensation . . .

"Serving on (the House Armed Services Committee) throughout his career, Hunter became Chairman of the full committee in 2002, overseeing a $532 billion defense budget. During his chairmanship from 2002-2006, and now as Ranking Member of the committee, Hunter focuses his efforts on providing President Bush with the necessary resources to win our nation’s military conflicts, protecting our men and women in uniform, and developing modernization initiatives that will move new and more effective technologies into the field of battle.

"Living in a border community, Hunter also came to Congress to make securing the California-Mexico border a top priority. Hunter’s goal was to make the region safe for communities on both sides of the border by providing the necessary resources to our border enforcement agencies. September 11th, however, made border security a national security issue and Hunter responded by leading efforts in Congress to seal a porous border susceptible to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism. Hunter’s efforts have resulted in over 59 miles of fencing and border infrastructure to date in San Diego County. Hunter also wrote the Secure Fence Act, extending the San Diego fence 854 miles across California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. These fence provisions were signed into law by President Bush on October 26, 2006.

"Hunter resides in East San Diego County with his wife Lynne . . . they have two sons, Duncan Duane, who served two tours in Iraq in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Sam Hunter, a business student at San Diego State University."

In addition to all of this, Rep. Hunter has the strongest pro-life position of all the candidates running.

Zack,
Thank you for the summary of Rep Hunter's career.

He will not garner any meaningful support. Therefore, he should drop out now.

Pro-life is not a qualification (litmus) test for the Presidency. Nor is anti-life.
